Black and Oak Kitchen with a Custom Range Hood
These homeowners came to us with a clear idea of what they did not want: another all white kitchen. They were after something with more contrast and more character, but still bright and easy to live with. The answer turned out to be a mix of three simple materials that play off each other really well.
Up top, we went bold with black cabinets. They frame the cooking wall and wrap all the way around the refrigerator, with a cabinet above it for extra storage, so the fridge looks built in rather than just pushed into a gap. Down below and on the island, we used a natural oak shaker finish. The warm wood keeps the black from feeling heavy and brings a relaxed, lived in feel to the room. Matte black pulls on every door and drawer tie the upper and lower cabinets together.
Between the two black wall cabinets sits a custom white range hood with clean, simple lines. Behind the cooktop, we installed a glossy square tile with a handmade look. Each piece has slight variations in color and surface, so the wall catches the light differently from one tile to the next and never looks flat.
The island is generously sized and topped with a bright white quartz that gives the family plenty of room for prep, homework or a casual dinner. All the perimeter counters match, keeping things clean and cohesive. A sleek induction cooktop keeps the counters flat and easy to wipe down.
Black cone pendants with brass accents hang over the island and pull together every color in the room: the black uppers, the warm wood and the touches of gold. It is a kitchen with a strong personality that still feels calm and welcoming.
