Black and White Shaker Kitchen with Stacked Cabinets and a Statement Island

This family wanted a kitchen that was classic, organized and big enough to bring everyone together. Their old kitchen did not have nearly enough storage, and the layout made it hard to cook and gather at the same time. We designed a timeless black and white kitchen with cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling and a large island right in the middle of the room.

Stacked Cabinets and Storage

Storage was the top priority, so we made the most of every inch of wall space. The white shaker cabinets are stacked in two tiers and finished with crown molding at the ceiling. The lower tier holds everyday dishes and pantry items, while the upper tier keeps seasonal pieces and extras neatly tucked away.

On both ends of the cabinet wall, we installed tall pantry columns that run nearly floor to ceiling. The refrigerator is framed by these pantries with cabinets above, so the whole wall looks clean, balanced and fully built in. Around the range, deep drawers keep pots, pans and utensils organized and easy to reach, and the microwave sits above the range to save counter space. Matte black pulls and knobs add a crisp, modern contrast to the white doors.

The Island

The island is the centerpiece of this kitchen. We finished it in a deep black shaker with decorative posts and a base molding along the bottom, giving it a furniture style look that stands out beautifully against the white cabinetry. It is long enough to seat four comfortably on one side, with plenty of cabinet storage on the working side.

On top, a white quartz with bold grey veining stretches across the entire island, giving the family a huge surface for prep, homework and casual meals. A black workstation sink with a matte black pull down faucet makes cleanup easy and ties in with the black hardware throughout the room.

Backsplash

We carried the same white quartz up the wall behind the range as a full slab backsplash. The soft grey veins add movement and elegance, and the smooth surface means there are no grout lines to clean after cooking.

Lighting

White dome pendants with black hardware hang over the island, adding a classic farmhouse touch and tying together the black and white palette. The warm wood look flooring keeps the space feeling cozy and inviting.

The Result

The finished kitchen is bright, organized and full of timeless style, with storage from floor to ceiling and an island that has quickly become the family’s favorite spot in the house.
