White Shaker Kitchen with a Black Range Hood and an Oversized Waterfall Island

This family’s kitchen sits right in the middle of a long open living space, with the family room on one side and the dining area on the other. They wanted a kitchen that could handle busy days with little ones, offer tons of storage and still look clean and stylish from every corner of the house. We designed a classic white kitchen with bold black accents and one very big island.

The Island

The island is the heart of this kitchen, and it is impressive. It stretches across the room with plenty of space for prep, homework, snacks and casual meals all at once. The base is a deep black shaker that gives the space a strong anchor, and it is topped with a bright white quartz that wraps down both ends in a waterfall edge. A large workstation sink with a brushed faucet sits on the working side, and outlets built into the back panels make it easy to plug in a laptop or a mixer from either side.

Cabinets and Storage

Along the perimeter, we installed white shaker cabinets with crown molding at the top. Instead of standard base cabinets, the cooktop wall is made up almost entirely of deep drawers, so pots, pans and everyday dishes are always easy to reach. The double wall ovens are built into a tall cabinet at a comfortable height, with storage above and below.

On the opposite wall, we created a full storage wall with tall pantry cabinets on both sides of the refrigerator and a cabinet above it. The fridge now sits neatly inside the cabinetry, and the family has more pantry space than they know what to do with. Matte black pulls on every door and drawer tie back to the island and the hood.

The Cooking Wall

The custom black range hood is the statement piece of the room. Its curved shape and layered molding give it a classic, almost furniture style look, and the black finish pops against the white cabinets. Below it, a sleek induction cooktop is set into the white quartz, and we ran the same quartz up the wall as a full slab backsplash. It is clean, simple and incredibly easy to wipe down after cooking.

Flooring

To finish the space, we installed light grey wood look flooring that runs through the kitchen and living areas. The soft tone keeps the open plan feeling bright and connected and balances the strong contrast of the black and white kitchen.

The Result

The finished kitchen is bright, organized and built for real family life, with a show stopping island, a statement hood and storage for absolutely everything.
