Bright White Shaker Kitchen with a Long Island for the Whole Family
This family spends a lot of time together in the kitchen, and their old layout simply did not have enough room for everyone. They wanted something bright, clean and timeless, with lots of storage and a big island where the kids could do homework while dinner was cooking. We designed a classic white shaker kitchen that opens right into the living and dining areas and feels warm and welcoming from every angle.
Cabinets and Storage
We installed white shaker cabinets finished with crown molding and staggered the heights of the uppers for a custom, layered look. Matte black pulls on every door and drawer add a crisp, modern contrast to the white.
Storage was a big priority, so we placed a tall double pantry right next to the refrigerator, with a cabinet above the fridge to make the whole wall look built in. Along the cooking wall, deep drawers sit on both sides of the range so pots, pans and utensils are always within reach. Next to the glass block window, we added a microwave drawer set into the base cabinets, keeping it handy and off the countertop.
Countertops and Backsplash
The countertops are a bright white quartz with a soft, subtle pattern that keeps the kitchen feeling fresh and open. We carried the same quartz up the walls as a full slab backsplash, which gives the room a clean, seamless look and makes cleanup quick and easy. A stainless chimney hood sits above the range and adds a nice modern touch.
The Island
The island is the true heart of this kitchen. It stretches across the room with seating for five on one side and plenty of storage on the other. We added decorative end panels and a base molding along the bottom, which gives the island a furniture style look. It holds an undermount sink with a matte black pull down faucet and the dishwasher, so prep and cleanup happen right where the family gathers.
Lighting and Flooring
Black lantern pendants hang over the island and add a touch of farmhouse charm, tying in beautifully with the black hardware and faucet. We finished the space with light wood look flooring that runs through the kitchen and living areas, bringing warmth to the bright white palette and connecting the whole open plan.
