European Matte Light Grey Kitchen with a Waterfall Island

The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt clean, calm and truly modern, without the coldness that sometimes comes with a minimalist design. Their home already had bright porcelain floors and high vaulted ceilings, so we focused on finishes that would make the most of all that light while adding a few bold touches in black.

We went with European style flat panel cabinets in a matte light grey. The matte finish is soft to the touch, hides fingerprints far better than gloss and gives the room a quiet, sophisticated feel. On the left wall, tall cabinet columns hold the double wall ovens and frame the refrigerator, creating a full wall of storage that looks completely built in. Slim matte black pulls run throughout and connect the cabinets to the black appliances, the black chimney hood and the black fixtures.

The island is the heart of this kitchen. We wrapped it in a white quartz with dramatic grey veining and dropped the slab down both ends in a waterfall edge, so it reads as one solid piece of stone. Our team carefully matched the veins where the top meets the sides, which is what gives it that natural, continuous flow. There is seating for four, plus an undermount black sink with a matte black spring faucet and a separate filtered water faucet right beside it.

We carried the same quartz up the back wall as a full slab backsplash. It is one of our favorite details in this project, because those big sweeping veins look like artwork behind the induction cooktop and make cleanup incredibly simple.

A sculptural globe chandelier floats over the island and finishes the space with a little bit of fun. The final result is a kitchen that feels bright, polished and timeless, with just the right amount of contrast.
