Light Oak and Soft Stone: A Calm, Modern Home

This house is all about calm. Light oak tones, soft stone, warm brass, and lots of natural light. Nothing loud, nothing fussy, just clean lines and finishes that feel good to live with every day.

The kitchen

We kept the cabinetry completely handleless. Every door and drawer opens with a recessed channel, so the long run of cabinets reads as one smooth wall of oak. On the far end, a floor to ceiling section wraps around the fridge and gives the homeowners a huge amount of pantry storage without breaking up the look.

The stone is what ties it all together. The same slab covers the countertops and runs straight up the wall as a full backsplash, and its soft linear vein almost looks like it was drawn in pencil. Instead of a wall of upper cabinets, we hung glass shelves on slim black frames. They keep the room open and give the owners a spot to show off a few favorite pieces.

The island is where this kitchen really earns its keep. It has a big workstation sink, waterfall stone on both ends, and a lower oak dining table built right into the side. So you can cook, serve, and sit down for dinner all in one place, with seating for six. Three brass pendants hang above it and warm up the whole space at night.

Tucked under the stairs there’s also a small bar area with a wine fridge, finished in the same oak so it feels like part of the kitchen rather than an afterthought.

The bathrooms

The primary bath has a long floating double vanity in light oak with open cubbies in the middle for rolled towels. The countertop is a soft gray stone, and behind it the wall is finished in a white wave textured tile that catches the light in a really nice way. Brushed brass wall mounted faucets, a freestanding soaking tub, and a long clerestory window round it out.

The powder room follows the same recipe on a smaller scale: oak vanity, stone top, wave tile, and brass fixtures. The guest bathrooms go a little different, with floating vanities in a warm taupe finish, white tops, and matte black faucets mounted right on the wall.

Why it works

Every room uses the same small group of materials, so the house feels connected from the front door to the back patio. That’s something we always aim for. When cabinetry, stone, and hardware all speak the same language, a home just feels more put together.
