Matte Black and Light Wood Kitchen with a Dramatic Slab Backsplash

This kitchen is all about contrast. The homeowners have a bold, modern style throughout their home, with dark accent walls and plenty of art, and they wanted a kitchen that felt like it belonged in the same house. We gave them one that is moody, warm and very easy to use.

We built the design around flat panel cabinets in two finishes. The upper and tall cabinets are a matte black that runs up toward the vaulted ceiling and wraps around the refrigerator and wall oven, giving that whole wall a clean, built in look. The lower cabinets and the island are a light wood grain that warms up the room and keeps all that black from feeling too heavy. Slim matte black pulls tie both finishes together, and the lower run is mostly deep drawers for pots, pans and everyday dishes.

The backsplash behind the range is the piece everyone asks about. Instead of tile, we used a single slab with rich bronze, rust and charcoal tones that almost looks like a painting. With the under cabinet lights on, the colors glow and the texture really comes out. A slim hood tucked under the cabinets keeps the focus right where it belongs.

The island is a big L shape, so there is room for prep, serving and seating all at once. We topped it with a white quartz with bold gray veining and a thick edge that gives it real presence. A black workstation sink and a matte black pull down faucet look sharp against the white, and a pop up outlet built into the counter keeps small appliances and chargers close by without any cords running across the stone.

The result is a kitchen with a strong personality that still feels bright, open and ready for everyday life.
