Modern Walnut and Gloss: A Whole Home Cabinetry Project

Some projects are one room. This one was the whole house, and it was a lot of fun to put together. The goal was a clean, modern look that still felt warm, so we paired a rich walnut finish with a soft gray high gloss and carried that combination from the kitchen all the way through to the laundry room.

The kitchen

The upper cabinets are walnut and run right up to the ceiling, with the gloss gray cabinets sitting just below them. It gives the wall some depth instead of one flat run of doors. Next to the fridge we built a full height pantry wall in the same walnut, with a narrow open cubby down the middle for wine bottles or cookbooks. It’s one of those details people notice the second they walk in.

The island is the centerpiece. It has a white quartz top with waterfall edges on both ends, and the front is wrapped in vertical wood slats that tie back into the walnut uppers. Hang a long wooden pendant over it and you’ve got the spot where everyone ends up standing during a party. Black hardware and a matte black faucet keep everything feeling sharp.

Living and dining

We didn’t want the cabinetry to stop at the kitchen. In the dining area and the living room we built floating buffet consoles in the same gloss gray, set on slim black legs with quartz tops. They give the open floor plan extra storage without making it feel crowded. The TV wall in the living room pulls in the wood slat look again, framing a textured panel in the center.

The bathrooms

Every bathroom got a modern vanity in that same soft gray gloss, topped with quartz and finished with a vessel sink and black fixtures. The primary bath has a freestanding tub under a big window, a frameless glass shower, and a long vanity with plenty of drawer space. The guest bathrooms each have their own personality. One goes bright with white marble look tile, and the other goes moodier with gray stone and a patterned shower floor.

Laundry room

Even the laundry room got the same treatment, with matching wall cabinets above the washer and dryer so the whole house feels connected, right down to the room most people forget about.
