Two Tone Grey Shaker Kitchen with a Marble Backsplash

This kitchen sits right at the center of an open floor plan, connecting the living room, the breakfast nook and the back patio. The homeowners wanted it to feel warm and inviting while staying clean and modern, and they needed a layout that could handle busy family mornings and weekend cooking with friends. We designed a long, open galley with a generous island that keeps everyone connected.

Cabinets

We went with a two tone approach using stained shaker cabinets. Along the perimeter, the cabinets are a soft grey stain that lets the natural wood grain show through, adding warmth and texture that painted cabinets simply cannot match. The island is finished in a deeper charcoal grey stain, which anchors the room and creates a nice contrast without feeling heavy. Brushed nickel pulls run throughout for a clean, classic look.

The upper cabinets are staggered in height, which adds visual interest and gives the wall a custom, furniture style feel. A tall cabinet tower holds the wall oven and microwave at a comfortable height, and deep drawers below the cooktop keep pots and pans organized and easy to reach.

Countertops and Backsplash

The countertops are a bright white quartz with a thick edge that gives the island real presence. It is a clean, durable surface that keeps the room feeling light and pairs beautifully with both grey finishes.

Behind the cooktop, we installed a marble subway tile in soft white and grey tones and ran it all the way to the ceiling around the stainless chimney hood. The natural veining in the marble adds just enough movement, and the under cabinet lighting makes the stone glow in the evening.

The Island

The island is long enough to serve as the main prep area, a casual dining spot and a gathering place all at once. It holds a large undermount sink with a spring faucet, the dishwasher and plenty of drawer storage on the working side, with seating on the other side facing the living room. Glass globe pendants overhead add a soft, modern touch without blocking the view across the open space.

The Result

The finished kitchen is warm, functional and beautifully connected to the rest of the home, with plenty of room to cook, gather and enjoy the natural light pouring in from the breakfast nook.
