This family spends most of their time together in the kitchen, so the brief was simple: more seating, more storage and a space that works just as well for a quiet weeknight dinner as it does for a houseful of guests. The original layout had good square footage but did not make the most of it. We reworked the whole room around a large angled island, added a second prep island and carved out a dedicated beverage bar, so everyone has their own spot to work.
The Island
The angled island is the real showpiece. We topped it with a white quartz featuring wide, sweeping grey veins that flow across the entire surface like a river. Because the island bends at an angle, our fabrication team had to plan the layout very carefully so the veins would continue naturally from one section to the next instead of breaking at the seams. On the end near the ovens, the stone drops down in a waterfall edge so the pattern wraps right around the corner.
On the seating side, we clad the island in grey stained wood planks. That rustic texture adds warmth and a bit of farmhouse charm against the polished stone, and it holds up well to stools and everyday use. With room for five stools, the island has become the family’s favorite place to gather. It also houses a large workstation sink with a black and stainless spring faucet plus a separate filtered water faucet.
Cabinets and Storage
We went with a two tone shaker design. The upper cabinets are bright white and finished with crown molding up to the ceiling, while the lower cabinets are a soft light grey that hides everyday wear and adds some depth to the room. Matte black pulls tie both colors together and pick up the black in the faucets and the light fixture.
Along the back wall, the double wall ovens and a professional style refrigerator are built right into the cabinetry with storage above, so the whole wall looks clean and organized. A smaller grey island with drawers and doors sits in the middle of the room, adding extra prep space and storage right where it is needed.
Cooktop and Backsplash
The cooking area features an induction cooktop under a stainless hood with lights that make the beveled white subway tile glow. The tile runs along the entire perimeter, adding a classic touch that balances the bold veining of the quartz. The grey drawers beneath the cooktop are deep enough to hold all the pots and pans within easy reach.
The Beverage Bar
One of the homeowners’ favorite additions is the beverage bar. We set it up in its own corner with grey base cabinets, a built in dual zone wine fridge and plenty of counter space for an ice maker and small appliances. Above it, glass front cabinets display glassware, and a stemware rack hangs underneath so wine glasses are always ready. It keeps drinks and snacks out of the main cooking zone, which makes entertaining much easier.
A black geometric chandelier over the small island finishes the space and gives the room a modern focal point.
The Result
The finished kitchen is bright, warm and incredibly functional, with seating for the whole family, storage for everything and a dedicated spot for every task.
