White and Grey Shaker Kitchen with a Built In Coffee Nook

This kitchen opens right into the family room, with big windows and a view of the water just beyond. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt light and welcoming, matched the relaxed coastal style of the rest of the house and gave them more room to cook and gather. We designed a classic two tone kitchen with a large island at the center and a few thoughtful details that make everyday life easier.

Cabinets

The upper cabinets are bright white shaker with crown molding along the top, and we varied their heights to work around the small windows above the counters. That staggered look adds character and lets natural light pour in right over the work surfaces.

For the lower cabinets and the island, we chose a grey stained shaker finish that lets the natural wood grain come through. It adds warmth and texture that pairs beautifully with the white uppers. Brushed nickel bar pulls on the doors and classic cup pulls on the drawers give the kitchen a timeless, slightly farmhouse feel.

Countertops and Backsplash

The countertops are a bright white quartz that keeps the room clean and fresh. Along the walls, we installed a tumbled stone mosaic in soft cream and grey tones. The small squares and natural texture add warmth and pick up the colors in both cabinet finishes, and the under cabinet lighting brings out every subtle variation in the stone.

The Island

The island is the main workspace and the place where everyone ends up. It holds a large double bowl undermount sink with a pull down faucet, the dishwasher and lots of drawer storage on the working side, with seating for the family on the other. Because it faces the living room, whoever is at the sink can keep an eye on the TV or chat with guests across the open space. Black lantern pendants hang above and add a nice contrast to all the white.

The Coffee Nook

One of our favorite details in this project is the built in coffee nook. We tucked it right into the cabinet run with an open shelf for mugs and the coffee press and a row of cubbies underneath for pods, tea and supplies. It gives the morning routine its own spot and keeps the main counters free for cooking.

The Result

The finished kitchen is bright, warm and practical, with plenty of storage, a big island for gathering and a style that fits perfectly with the rest of this waterfront home.
