White Gloss and Woodgrain Kitchen with an Angled Island

This kitchen had an unusual layout to work with, and instead of fighting it, we leaned into it. The result is an angled island that wraps around the cooking area and makes the whole space feel more open and social.

The island

The island follows the angle of the room, bending in the middle instead of running in one straight line. That shape gives the homeowners more counter space and room for four stools along the outside, all facing into the kitchen. On the working side there’s a large workstation sink with a sliding cutting board and drying rack, a brushed nickel faucet, a dishwasher, and a stack of deep drawers. The base is wrapped in a warm gray woodgrain, and a long rectangular cage chandelier hangs right above it.

Two finishes that balance each other

The upper cabinets are a bright white high gloss slab door, so they reflect the light and keep the kitchen feeling airy. Down below, the base cabinets switch to a textured woodgrain in a soft gray brown tone that adds warmth and hides everyday wear. Long stainless bar pulls run across both finishes and tie them together. At the end of the upper run, we added rounded open shelves for a little display space and a softer finish at the corner.

The cooking wall

A stainless chimney hood sits above a double oven range, with a gray brick style tile backsplash running behind it and along the counters. Under cabinet lighting brings out the texture in the tile at night. The refrigerator is framed with cabinets above, and a microwave drawer is tucked into the lower cabinets so it stays out of sight.

The result

A kitchen that turned an awkward angle into its best feature, with plenty of seating, smart storage, and a clean mix of white and wood.
